News: MBAM Urge Construction Firms To Embrace Digitalisation

Oct 31, 2019

With the construction industry on track to hitting this year’s 1.7 percent growth forecast, the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) has urged local construction firms to embrace digitalisation to accelerate growth.

“We need to change the mindset. Many construction players hold back because they feel that cost is a factor,” said MBAM President Foo Chek Lee following the launch of the MBAM Building and Construction Conference 2019.

“Initially, yes, cost will be a factor. But eventually, with digitalisation, it will become more cost-effective to run the business.”

And unlike other industries which have adopted digitalisation, the construction industry has been slow in adopting technological changes.

He noted that the use of digital technologies has just become a common idea among industry players, primarily due to the building information modelling (BIM) system, reported The Star.

“If construction services are to be delivered with less effort and higher accuracy, then digitalisation in the construction industry must change from an idea to becoming a norm,” said Foo.

“Construction players need to change from just being aware and partially adopting digitalisation, to fully implementing it in all of its activities.”

BIM is an intelligent 3D model-based process which provides construction professionals tools and insights to efficiently plan as well as design buildings and infrastructure.

The government expected the local construction industry to expand by 1.7 percent this 2019, while forecasting a 3.7 percent growth in 2020, on the back of projects outlined in Budget 2020.

Supported by the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB), the MBAM Building and Construction Conference 2019 is organised by MBAM in partnership with Cinnotek International Group.
